I hope it doesn't draw any Cloverfield comparisons, because although they're both found footage films with giant monsters, they're nothing alike. For a group of students investigating a series of bear killings, they have all the optimism and ferociousness to get the job done.
Following a possible bear poacher, they meet The Troll Hunter, who tries to get them to get lost, but they only become more interested. When he finally tells them who he is, and what he does, the country's top Troll Hunter.
To reveal too much about the Trolls themselves would be to ruin much of the fun, which is derived from seeing the different types, their habits, and the implications of keeping such an enormous secret. The movie is at times darkly funny, but it's always tense with a strong sense of foreboding.
The way this film is shot is brilliant, the found footage style is put to great use, capturing giant CGI Trolls as if they were Redwoods in front of the filmmakers. The awesome concept is sold only by the reality of the f/x, which are very well done, the detail and physics of the Trolls hold up under scrutiny. A really fun time, the first great genre film of the year.
9.4/10
