Due Date (2010)

Written by Alan R. Cohen & Alan Freedland and Adam Sztykiel & Todd Phillips
Directed by Todd Phillips

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles for the new millennium accurately describes it. Since his resurrection from the throes of addiction, Robert Downey Jr has consistently been doing exciting, self-aware films that play on his long, winding past, and this reaches into that bag, asking, what if he had stayed clean and gone comic earlier?

Put together with Zach Galifianakis they are a predictable, but no less funny, pair. Their exploits across the landscape are fun, and funny. I would say this is probably the lightest comedy of Phillips' career, with real moments of emotional depth. However, don't be fooled, this is still the man that built his fortune on Old School and The Hangover, so it still has its subversive moments.

The supporting cast is great as always, with hilarious cameos from Jamie Foxx and Danny McBride among others. I heard a lot of negative reviews when this first came out but I don't get it. Exactly as advertised.

8.9/10
