I Saw the Devil (2010)

Written by Hoon-Jung Park
Directed by: Ji-woon Kim

The latest from the director of A Bittersweet Life and Good, Bad, and the Weird goes back into serious mode, bringing the world one of the most brutal serial killers since Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer or Maniac.

The plot is simple, Kim Soo-hyeon (Byung-Hun Lee, A Bittersweet Life) is a special agent for the South Korean government. One night, when his wife breaks down on a snowy road, the worst happens. A maniac beats and abducts her, only to rape her and dismember her body, dumping it in a local stream, where it is found by some teens.

Kim Soo-hyeon takes the advice of his father-in-law, the Captain of the Violent Crimes unit, and seeks the men who may have been responsible. Armed with a list of the police's top four suspects, he methodically tracks them down, until he finds the right man (Min-sik Choi, Oldboy). Instead of killing him, he opts for the perfect revenge, slow, methodical, and repeat.

The killer turns out to be a formidable foe, and the two go on a rampage across the city attempting to destroy the other, and everything they may care about. It's Se7en, if it picked up at the end, when Brad Pitt went for revenge.

Expertly shot, it's full of surprises and keeps ticking to the final seconds. Smart, visceral, and grisly, it's not for the faint of heart. Min-sik Choi is a ruthless, cunning serial killer with brutal methods and realistic motivations. Plenty of rape and gore pepper this portrait of the evil within men, and few films do it as effectively as this one.

9.5/10
