Based on the Graphic Novel by Frank Miller
Written by Zack Snyder & Kurt Johnstad and Michael Gordon
Directed by Zack Snyder
The tale of 300 brave Spartan warriors who stood up to the million-man Persian Army at the battle of Thermopylae is a legendary event in human history. At no other time in history did people stand up to such an immense sense of defeat, with such a light in their hearts, and a desire to die for their country.
When King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) walks his men into battle against the savage Persians, he only guarantees his men that they will fight to the death, and that they will never stand by and watch their nation be defiled by the warlord Persian king, Xerxes.
Obviously, this film is all about the battles, and Zack Snyder took a novel approach by using all CGI backgrounds and shooting it all green screen to create the rich backgrounds that are full of mood and atmosphere. The visual design sets this film apart from most others made before it, but the story is nearly as full and rich as the visuals. It's a complex tale of pride, honor, and treachery and the brave men that fought for their country in a different time and place. A revolutionary film, one that is a joy to watch over and over.
9.2/10
